Coastal German Shepherd Rescue received the following email on 5/26/2011:
THIS POOR G. SHEP (ID#A877569) WAS SEEN BY A VOLUNTEER WHEN SHE WAS DELIVERED TO THE SHELTER IN RIVERSIDE AFTER BEING HIT BY A GARBAGE TRUCK! LUCKILY, SHE MADE IT OUT ALIVE AND ABLE TO WALK BUT AN ENTIRE PATCH OF HER SKIN HAS BEEN RIPPED OFF HER LEFT SIDE DURING THE ACCIDENT. BECAUSE OF THIS SHE WILL NOT BE SHOWN FOR ADOPTION AND WILL PROBABLY BE PUT TO SLEEP IN THE NEXT DAY OR TWO.
After reading this email, we decided that we needed to help this poor, innocent German Shepherd. With our medical funds depleted, we were not sure how we were going to afford to get her the medical care she needs, but decided that we would work hard to raise the funds needed and knew that we could turn to our loyal supporters for help!
We picked up Schatzi this morning and brought her to our vet team at Alicia Pet Care Center. She is receiving wound care and will be hospitalized for some time while the wound heals and new skin in generated. Our vet team will work closely to make sure that the wound does not become infected or necrotic. Even though we know she is in pain, she has remained sweet, gentle and patient.
Please help us fund Schatzi's rescue! We need the community to rally around Schatzi and make this happen for her. She deserves it!
Your donation is tax deductible and every dollar makes a difference!
Update: 5/27/2011
We were able to spend some time with Schatzi today and wow, she is a real sweetie! Such a lovely girl who will feel so much better once she is healed. After talking with Dr. Wheaton, we have raised our fundraising goal. Schatzi may indeed need surgical closure of this wound after it heals. Typically there is an island of granulation tissue that does not close up. We are planning for this, as we he had exactly this same experience with Gideon's treatment. We are hoping that with a few weeks of treatment, laser therapy and bandage changes her wound will show dramatic improvement.
You can read her story on OC Register and KCAL:

Please donate today and help us continue to treat Schatzi!
5/31/2011: Schatzi is doing well. Her wound is healing as we would like to see and she seems to be a fast healer! Laser therapy will start this week and that should also speed up the process. We should have some new pictures to post tomorrow. Please continue to send your positive thoughts to Schatzi! We still need help raising the funds for her care as well. It will be a lengthy process, but well worth the wait!
