I just returned from an amazing week at Camp Del Corazon. The things that I had witnessed and experienced there were to great for words to even explain! I had 7 beautiful, talented and outgoing 14 year old girls in my cabin and the spirit they showed regardless of their conditions was astounding!
This year at camp was especially eye opening for me. I grew up with a heart condition and I have a pacemaker, but I was healthy for the most part and didn't have TOO many restrictions. This year at camp during what we call "cabin closing" my girls told me something that opened my eyes to the seriousness of heart disease. My doctors had never told me my life expectancy, they had never even hinted that I would have a shorter life because of my condition, but for these girls, at the ripe age of 14 were told that they may not live past 40. And 4 of them were told that they were not able to have children.
At this time, I was reminded of the importance of Camp. For these girls, this was the only week throughout the year that they could be completely care free! The harsh reality of dying before their time or remembering to take their meds was not a burden for them this week. They could simply be the kids that they deserved to be.
With the burden of medical bills in the families of these specials kids, most of them would not be able to afford the oppurtunity of coming to camp. In fact, it would cost roughly $1,500 for each kid to attend for one week. This is why we need sponsors and donations so that these unique children can have this incredible experience. For some of them, it is the first time ever being in the ocean, ever climbing a rock wall, trying archery, going kayaking or performing a skit on stage for their fellow campers.
These children need a place where they can feel normal. They need a place where they can meet friends just like them to support them the rest of the year.
