CURE CHILDHOOD CANCER

CURE's Kids Conquer Cancer One Day at a Time! Atlanta,  Georgia

Meredith McBee

Meredith McBee's Story:

It all started at the end of fifth grade.  I don’t remember when but my left leg started hurting and I started to limp.  My family thought I had probably sprained my leg, and we’d just go to the doctor and be finished.  Well that wasn’t the case.  I was sent to the emergency room, and they thought I had a tissue problem and sent me home. I went to several other doctors over the next few weeks, and it was determined I had a bone cancer called osteosarcoma in my left femur.

Later that month, I had a port put in, so that chemo could go through it.  Shortly after that, my tumor broke my leg.  I started chemo immediately after I got my cast on. That stuff stinks!  I needed lots of rounds of chemo before my big surgery which took the tumor out.  The surgery was a success and showed that the chemo had a ninety-nine percent kill rate in the tumor.

After that surgery, I had more chemo and physical therapy over the next six months.  These months were filled with nose bleeds, screams, mouth sores, and ER visits, but I made it through.  I even had my 12th birthday on my last inpatient stay (nurses love cake).  On my last chemo, some of the nurses came in and gave me some arts and crafts and a balloon.  I was so totally, extremely happy! But I still needed to work on walking which came a bit later.  Now I have been cancer free for one and a half years.  In July 2009, I had another surgery to fix the length of my leg and may need another one… but for now, I’m just happy being a normal teenager.

In her own words, Meredith McBee

About CURE Childhood Cancer:
Founded in 1975, CURE Childhood Cancer is dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through research, education and support of patients and their families. Since its establishment as a grass-roots organization, CURE has focused its efforts on improving the care, quality of life, and survival rate of children with cancer.

The founders, parents and a dedicated pediatric oncologist, joined forces to support laboratory research that would translate into immediate care for children with cancer.

Since that time, CURE has raised millions of dollars to fund cutting edge research at the Aflac Cancer Center Blood Disorders Service at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University School of Medicine.

Through innovative programming, CURE also provides support for stricken families, providing them comfort and support during their time of devastating need.
