Conservators Center, Inc.

Den boxes for new rescues

Den boxes for new rescues

The Conservators' Center Inc. participates in a coalition of organizations to manage and mediate animal emergency and crisis resolution situations nationally. Therefore, we are often called on to assist with a variety of needs, which sometimes includes the placement of rescued animals at the Center itself. We are dedicated to providing a high quality of care for the animals that reside with us.

Misha pictured left is one of the latest rescues. She arrived pregnant and ready to deliver anyday. She now resides with another group of servals. Her newborns have become ambassador animals. They participate in educational programs for the local community. Several animals will find their new home at the Center. These include 3 servals, a binturong, a Eurasian lynx, a Canadian lynx, and an ocelot.

Tres(as in French "very") an elderly ocelot will be among the new arrivals. For years she lived with her beloved family in Mississippi with a doting Mom and Dad. Then came Hurricane Katrina. With their home destroyed, the family was forced to move in with relatives who understandably were not prepared for an ocelot moving in with them. Tres was placed at a very nice private sanctuary in Florida. The sanctuary owner has a very small staff and  few volunteers, so no one was able to spend a lot of time with Tres. They got concerned when she seemed to be getting more depressed and lonely, and since she is in her late teens, they were hesitant to introduce her to other cats for the first time. We have agreed to take her in and try to work with her. She has never lived north of the Mississippi. This means that this winter she will need an excellent winter living space to stay warm. She will also require some extra staff and volunteer time to make sure she stays happy.

Diego is also finding his new home with us. He is a neutered and declawed Canada lynx who has lived all his life in a bedroom of a house in a city, where he is not legal. He has gotten good vet care and a good diet. His owners can no longer keep him. Here's the hard part -he has never met anyone except his human Mom and Dad, and the vet staff, and he is aggressive to strangers. He has never met another animal, cat or dog or anything else. And, now Diego will be exposed to weather, grass, and bugs -a totally new enviroment. This will be a tough transition for him. His family plans to visit him, and we hope to integrate him into a cage with others soon, so he can make friends.

In order to house these new arrivals properly, we need to provide them with den boxes. These boxes are insulated and heated. The carpentry work is donated but the material cost is not.  The fundraising amount will provide a new den box for each new arrival as well as our latest rescues including Misha.
