Having a child with special needs in the family is both a challenge and a blessing. When Cyrus was born on February 14, 2010, 8 weeks early his due date, he was diagnosed with Down syndrome. He had to stay at the NICU for a month and had to be hooked on oxygen 24/7 because he developed pulmonary hypertension due to an open valve in his heart plus two other holes in his atrial and ventricular walls. At 3 months old he underwent an open heart surgery at UCSF. A strong baby he proved himself to be... After more than two weeks at the ICU, his condition had improved. He pulled it out through and was completely off his oxygen when he was 11 months old.
Despite a difficult start, our family is so blessed to have Cyrus. He is a very delightful baby. He brings so much joy to our family. Like any other kid with Down syndrome, he has developmental delays and so we are doing the best we can to nurture him and achieve his potential. With patience and guidance he is slowly getting there...
The "Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area" (D.S.C.B.A.) has been very involved in helping individuals with Down syndrome as well as their families. This is very important, because given the proper stimulation, therapy, and care, people with Down syndrome can fully develop their abilities thus integrating them into society to their highest potential.
Although Cyrus has not participated in the DSCBA programs, our family strongly supports the group's noble task of helping families and individuals with Down syndrome in our area. We are knocking on your generosity to donate any amount to this fundraiser. Everything that you give will surely go to a very good cause in sustaining the programs intended for people with special needs and their families.
