Little Terrier mix Rudolph ( Rudy ) lie waiting in a shelter with diabetes and possible thyroid problems that his owners failed to treat him for over the last 7 months. He weighed 23 lbs 7 months ago. He is now 5.7 lbs and all bones. His foster Mom bathed him and of course he looked worse. The vet thought he should be seen so she took him down and didn’t leave the vet hospital for hours and got back home at 4am. They tested his blood sugar and it was so high it was off the meter. They gave him some fast acting insulin and a prescription for humulin insulin to give every12 hrs. The vet gave the foster Mom some canned diabetic food and we will be buying some dry diabetic food, which is more expensive. The foster mom paid for the insulin and syringes... which he will need for life. He had his first insulin injection Dec 11th. The vet was not pleased that he didn't get the treatment he needed for 7 months in his previous home and said little Rudy could incur complications. However, he was very encouraged because of his energy level...as he peed on the floor in the consult room...after peeing in the treatment room 4 times in the exam room. These aren't little ones they are giant puddles. They finally just kept the mop out so the foster Mom could clean up the floor. The vet said best thing would be to keep Rudy for 12 hrs at the vet hospital and monitor the glucose to get him somewhat stabilized. That will of course be even more money along with frequent glucose checks and monitoring.
Good news...he is fearless, loves everyone and was the hit of the ER. Barking at a 100 lb Rottie and whining to go visit people. Everyone loved him and was laughing at him being cute/ugly looking. He is very scraggly, missing hair and all bones with an underbite...but you gotta love the personality. Little Rudy entertained us in the vet hospital’s waiting room. His treatment to rehabilitate him will be ongoing and costly. Little Rudy asked nothing but to be loved and taken care of and humans failed him. Please find it in your heart to help Tails of Hope rehabilitate this little guy and renew his faith in mankind. Donations can be made by this FirstGiving page or on our website at www.tails-of-hope.org by PayPal (please denote the description as “donation for Rudy” or send a check or money order to our address below: Rudy knows its Christmas time and people don't have money. For Rudy just getting some treatment to feel better is the best present he could have. He appreciates any amount you can give.

UPDATE: Rudy’s glucose reading was 600. Normal is around 100 so they increased his insulin to 5 units...another testing in 2 wks. He has diabetic corneas and there is a little laceration on his eye.
