The Big Beat II
A 5-Star Drum Shop Event
Resurrection Drums is hosting their 2nd annual drum festival and fundraiser called, “The Big Beat II”. Drummers from all over South Florida, bring their drum sets to downtown Hollywood, to break the Guinness World Book Record for the most drummers playing the same beat at the same time. Ten cities across the US and one in Canada will help break the record they set in 2008.
Not only will the record be broken, but local school music programs will reap the benefits. Participates are asked to pay a $15 registration fee and collect donations for the cause. All the money raised will go to Mr. Holland’s Opus. Mr. Holland’s Opus is a charitable organization that provides new instruments to underprivileged schools and their music programs. The best part is, all the donations raised, will go to schools here in South Florida! Last year, Hollywood’s event raised over $4,000. Every penny went back to local schools with under funded music programs. Nationally, the Big Beat raised over $40,000.
In 2008 the Big Beat in Hollywood, had approximately 150 participants, and 3,500 spectators showed up to support the cause.
The Big Beat is an all day event, which is free and open to the public. Participants come in and set up their drum sets, in a similar fashion to a car show, and get prizes for the biggest kit, best vintage kit, prettiest kit, etc.
Local high school Drum Lines perform and compete, famous drummers that live in the area give drum demonstrations on the main stage. Nicko McBrain (from Iron Median), Third World and Inner Circle (Reggae Bands), Derek Roddy (world renowned drummer), where all there in 2008. Even more are planned for 2009!
The Big Beat will of course have several raffles (this year’s major raffle will be an autograph drum head by Rush drummer, Neil Peart), give-a-ways, and local middle school bands performing in the food court area. It’s a full day of fun for the entire family, young and old. Just make sure to bring your ear plugs!
