More than one million children are trafficked each year and sold into forced labor or the sex trade. In the Mekong sub-region of Southeast Asia, extreme poverty leads to the high incidence of trafficking. Poor children are particularly vulnerable as they are often unsupervised by adults. They are lured by traffickers who promise good-paying jobs in the city and the hope of a better life. But instead they become modern day slaves, exposed to violence and abuse.
At World Concern we believe that prevention is the key to curbing the increase in child trafficking and exploitation. We work to keep children safe in their community by providing educational opportunities to the most vulnerable, offering them real hope for a better future. Children are taught to iden¬tify traffickers’ lies and avoid danger¬ous situations.
We provide families with information and tools for safe migration if they are con¬sidering moving. And World Concern offers safe haven—a home away from home— for children who have been rescued from slavery, or whose safety is at risk if they continue to live in their current circumstances. Children thrive in a healthy place where they can heal and continue their education.
