David Hughes's Fundraising Page
Hello Friends and Family,
Thank you for visiting my personal Melanoma Foundation of New England 2010 Boston Marathon fund-raising page.
Please remember to put a comment in the comment section if you are taking the challenge with me by doubling your pledge if I break 3 hours and 50 minutes or by tripling your pledge if I beat my personal best of 3:53 (Whoops, it's now 3:44!).
NOW, LET’S GET A FEW THINGS STRAIGHT
First, things that are NOT cool
- Tanning beds
- The people from the Jersey Shore
- The incidence of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, is rising faster than that of any other cancer
- One person dies every hour from skin cancer, primarily melanoma
- Although the average age of diagnosis is 52, melanoma is the second most common cancer in people aged 25-29
Not let’s talk about things that ARE cool
- You
- Me
- The Melanoma Foundation of New England
- Taking the challenge to help me set a personal best
Below are just a few examples of how our donations will be put to use:
- Sponsoring Educational Programs (below are just a few)
- Your Skin Is In – Ask high school students to take a no-tanning pledge
- Community & Corporate Safety Programs – educating the public on the dangers of sun damage
- Facial Scanning – These scanners show areas on your face that are susceptible to sun damage
- Symposiums - Each symposium brings together some of the top minds in the medical and support communities to provide updated information and insights to patients, their families and caregivers
- Support Tanning Bed Legislation – Many states have either voted on or are drafting legislation that will require children to have parental consent before being allowed to use a tanning salon
- Support Population-Based Research – This research looks for ways in which we can help change behavior and attitudes
- Assisting the Advisory Board – This board is comprised of business people, health care professionals, and leading melanoma specialists that provide guidance for the Foundation
Go Sox!
