Update April 14, 2012: Dodger had his big vet appointment this last week, and has been NEUTERED! He gave us a scare as he drug his back legs post op, but by Thursday was running an meeting us at the gates! All this despite this winter storm that has hit the area! Dodger is ready to run into his new forever family's home... is it YOURS? Adoption application is on our website at: www.daphneyland.com Come meet Dodger and prepare to be drooled upon!
Update April 2, 2012: Many have asked for an update on Dodger, so here it is! Dodger is doing great, however still has a weakened rear end. It would be BEST for Dodger to have surgery so that long term he has the best chance at remaining mobile on his own for life, however the surgery alone without scans is estimated at $2,500.00 at best price. So far, Dodgers care which include vet bills, medications, food, supplements etc have exceeded $3,000.00. His eye infections STILL are not cleared, once they do (we are hopeful it will be this week) he will be scheduled for neuter and dental. His funding is still below what the organization has incurred on costs. At this time, the vets feel he does not need surgery - we are hopeful that we can reduce the full estimate of rehab care to $6,000.00 - however, this is still unknown. Once neutered, Dodger will become available for adoption. His adoptive family will need to consider his long term supplement needs and possibility of future paralysis. A lot for a family to consider, but they are out there and we have great luck in finding them! In the meantime Dodger loves everyone! And what a sweetheart he is! Plan to visit Dodger on Big Sunday Bath Day May 6th, or at our Hoedown on May 12, 2012!! details on our facebook page at www.facebook.com/daphneyland
Update Feb. 18, 2012: Dodger is now walking most of the time. He is still on limited exercise (today a wonderful family arrived and he took a short walk with them on a leash!) His next vet visit is in about a week. With winds, rain and snow this last week we were all very concerned he would loose some ground on his stability, but he held up! He's doing GREAT!!
Update: January 31, 2012: Dodger is walking a small amount, very wobbly but is back up on his legs. Cart running he excells at and can spend up to 3 hours before I chase him down and make him rest!! He's such a sweet and happy boy - it's hard to believe anyone would give up on him!! Come on Dodger - we KNOW you will make it!!
Jan 21, 2012 at 4 a.m. Our hardworking shelter coordinator was unable to sleep and signed on to check shelter updates. She found a shelter plea about a basset at Downey shelter, his owner had brought him in due to rear end paralysis and incontinence. The shelter was requesting rescue immediately or they would have to put him to sleep.
That's how we met Dodger.
Linda Miller immediately rose to the occaision and provided a lift for Dodger, and here he is upon intake. 8 years old and not quite sure what his crime was to be dumped at a shelter.
Dodger has some rear leg movement and deep tissue response. We are in the middle of a storm, which can absolutely cause temporary paralysis. Thru some hard working detective work, we found his vet and have discovered this is a new situation that was not seen by a vet prior to shelter dump. That's all now in his past.
Dodger will need lots of therapy, possible surgery, nutritional rehab and a warm cozy place to make his dream come true. Dodger would like to walk. Barni at Daphneyland is going to help him do just that!
