FREDERICK COUNTY, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF

Madison Street Duplex for Deborah and Marialva Frederick,  Maryland

Deborah Gilbert's Fundraising Page

Hi Everybody,

I am raising money to build our dream homes.  A dream come true is close to happening.  By donating you will be helping to make this dream come true.

Here is how I came to Frederick:

Monday August 29th, 2005 I was awakened by water dripping onto my bed. The window next to my bed was cracked from being sucked in and out by the heavy wind and I prayed that the window did not give way.

Then came calm, Hurricane Katrina was over, although water was still leaking from the light fixtures and pouring through the ceiling. I walked out to my second floor balcony to view the storm’s damage.   My neighbor from the third floor called down letting me know the roof was off, but he survived the storm by clinging to his bathroom door.   I saw water rising like a river through my apartment complex. With no electricity, water, or other utilities, I cooked meat contributed by neighbors on my balcony grill to feed all who had need.

Wednesday, I left my water damaged apartment with only a backpack, walked two miles down the levy and joined the throngs being airlifted from the University of New Orleans to the Interstate. All night helicopters kept delivering people. When I awoke on the Interstate Thursday morning, there were more people in one place than I had seen my entire life. Buses began taking survivors out of New Orleans. The process was like herding cattle; families were packed in and split on separate buses. I was taken to the Houston Astrodome. This was the worst part of my journey because reality was setting in, I had lost my home and had no place to go.

Friday morning I called a friend to help me.  She said “Go to the airport. Get your ticket which is waiting for you and get on the plane”. I arrived at the gate to see my destination, BWI, Baltimore MD.

By Sunday evening through strangers’ kindness, I owned new clothes from local Frederick shops.

Local Realtor, Cecelia Bach, set me and others up with apartments. Cecelia and friends took care of furniture and food. A young lady holding a baby even installed a shower curtain in my new apartment’s bathroom. With tears in my eyes thinking of coming to Frederick, I tell people I experienced “the heart of God’s people, truly God’s people.” From complete devastation to the warmth and caring of Frederick, it has been a journey of a lifetime.
