DMC Team World Vision's Page
Hello!
If you've made it here to this page, it's probably because you know someone on our team ... or maybe you got here through hearing something at Devonshire Church ... how you made it here doesn't matter, but we're glad you did!
All of us are training towards the Baltimore Half Marathon (except for Erin - she's going for the full marathon, and Heather - she'll be doing the 5K) and we're looking forward to the challenge ... but even more we are really excited about the opportunity to raise support and awareness for the work that World Vision is doing around the world.
World Vision works to tackle the root causes of poverty by working with children, families, and their communities to provide things like clean water, health care, nutritious food, education, and economic opportunities.
The specific project that the funds we raise will go towards is the Clean Water Fund. In Africa, many walk 5-8 miles every day for clean water. The funds that we're raising will go towards helping provide clean water wells in villages where there are none.
Here are just two of the ways that clean water can impact a community:
- When a well is built in a community the infant mortality rate drops by as much as half almost immediately.
- Before a well is built diarrhea is deadly in many communities, where it is just an embarrassment to us, it is a life sentence to them. A clean water well and the education World Vision workers provide along with that well eradicate diarrhea and help make it an annoyance rather than life-threatening.
Typically, these are the costs for getting the clean water to these villages:
- treadle pump is $400 (foot powered pump for irrigation)
- shallow well is $5,000-$6,000 (can often supply more than 600 gallons of safe water a day to communities of at least 150ppl or more for drinking, bathing, watering livestock and irrigating crops)
- deep well is average $18,000 (when water is hundreds of feet below hard rock, provides 2,800 gallons of safe drinking water a day to 300ppl)
Imagine what we can do together! Please join our team and support our efforts through Team World Vision by making a one-time tax-deductible donation.
Thanks again for stopping by!
