I am one of fifteen lucky kids participating in the Triabetes Triabuddies project. I've been paired up with an adult athlete with Type I diabetes who is training for the 2009 Ironman Arizona. I'm following his training all summer and it is insane! (Check out his blog at http://t1d-runner.blogspot.com/) My buddy has already run 49 marathons and this will be his first triathalon. Before I meet him and the rest of the Triabetes team, I'll take a 3-day sail- and kayaking journey to the Channel Islands off the California Coast with the other kids. We'll have a group of diabetes experts to help us work as a team to show that we have what it takes to overcome diabetes in the face of adversity.

On November 19, we'll reach Santa Barbara, then fly to Phoenix to meet our training buddies. On Sunday, the day of the Ironman, I'll use the diabetes management I learned on the sailing trip to help him cross the finish line.
