BUDDY'S STORY :
In 2007 while working at another non-profit animal shelter I was fortunate enough to run a private rescue in an effort to help those dogs that were not ready for adoption, get a second...or maybe a third, chance. My focus was mainly on dogs that had behavior problems or those breeds with a "bad rap" who just needed another environment to flourish. In the area I lived Pitbulls made up the majority of "shelter dogs"; and due to their underserved bad reputation, had a difficult time finding new homes. I was often called by on by local animal shelters to take, what grew to be my favorite breed of dog, the pitbull. In September of 2007 I received a particularly distressing call from a local humane society....
The Executive Director, and close friend, contacted me reguarding a 4 month old puppy they had found outside a notorious dog fighting location. The puppy was missing 70% of it's hair, had bite wounds over his body, was nothing but bones (weighing a meager 10 pounds), and had duct tape wrapped tightly around his muzzle. The shelter was over crowded and feared the worst outcome for the frightened puppy....Of course being the pitbull adorer I am, I quickly stated I would be up that night to pick him up and hopefully save him from his unfortunate fate. It was their belief that he was used as a "Bait dog" in the local fighting ring...and when he was too weak, and too much expense to feed, they dumped him like trash onto the side of the road with his muzzle still taped so he couldn't "fight back" while other dogs used him as a training toy to fight. When we arrived at the shelter, in true pitbull fashion, he excitably greeted us with tail wags, wiggles, and kisses....you see, he didn't judge people for what they did to him, for the injustices put upon him...he still knew he loved them, no matter what. Months passed, and Buddy (as we affectionately called him) socialized with my 4 other dogs, regained his coat, put on weight, and began to live as a normal happy puppy. He came on outings to the dog park, loved to play with dogs and was happy to snuggle up with my cats. He was everything his new name stated he was. But, alas, as all rescuers do...we have to say "goodbye"...at 7 months old we found Buddy a wonderful home with another dog companion and a few cats to boot :) He was happy, and so was his new family.
Years past, and only a few months ago I received a call I never thought I would...Buddy's new mom and dad were separating...Buddy's mom was going to live where "Pitbulls" were NOT ALLOWED...and Buddy's dad took the other animals but did not want Buddy. So after two and a half years, Buddy came back home...unfortunately he returned home with severe separation anxiety and a bit of a lack of manors...but still the happy go lucky, lovin' life dog I remember him to be. Buddy has been back with us for 3 months now, and with us is where he will stay. He is on the road to recovery and has been an all star in both obedience and agility and looking forward to competing in agility next year! He is on his way to receive his Canine Good Citizens Certification and hopefully on to become a therapy dog. His wounds from his past have healed, although leaving scars and discolored fur...but he soldiers on, as a true Pitbull, to help break the stereotype and give hope to under dogs every where. Buddy and I are committed to showing the world, no matter what breed, no matter what history, every dog has his day, and everybody deserves a second chance! So thank you, from the bottom of both our hearts, for all you do and continue to do to support the efforts of the NHSPCA where you can visit Buddy in my office, across from the Training Room...giving you those big brown eyes and greeting you at the door...just like in his picture - Thank you, Eden
