I'd now like to share with you a shelter rescue story that is near and dear to my heart;  a story that provides a reason for my passion, my job, and your donation.  This is the story of one of my own dogs, Lorenzo:

Lorenzo (formerly Cujo) (any of you who have met this handsome man know why that name never fit him).  When I first met Lorenzo about 7 years ago he had been living outside in a crate for 3 years, and never let out, often without food, or water which was visually evident as he was an unneutered male doberman adult weighing only 42 pounds!  He had two very aggressive mixed breed dogs on either side of him.  At the time I was a Humane Law Enforcement Officer for the City of North Charleston, SC.  His owner was arrested for cruelty/neglect charges for Lorenzo and his two canine "roomates" if you will.  When I brought him to the shelter in South Carolina I was told that all of the kennels were full and to bring him in to be euthanized.  At this time he was not the most friendly canine, and who could blame him. He had no reason to believe people could provide any kindness.  As I personally hoisted him up onto the euthanasia table (as I had sadly had to do many times before) he looked up at me..and that was it.  I said, "No, wait a minute, today is NOT his day".  I quickly ran to the Director of Operations for the shelter and asked if I could do fostercare.  She explained that he was extremely high heartworm positive, had kennel cough, and permanent damage to his lungs and heart and the shelter did not have the finances to cover any medical care.  My heart sank..then I begged the Director to give me 24 hours to come up with the $2,500+ it would take to save his life (hopefully).  All night and into the next morning I called on any favor, wrote grants, and desperately pleaded his case to various animal agencies asking for help.  By 3pm the next day I was able to have $1,500 donated to his care and then was able to use any and all savings I had (plus a few future christmas gifts) to cover the rest.  So Lorenzo came home....through the next 6 months he was able to learn to trust people again, be with other dogs happily, and gain his normal weight back...he's now 94 pounds!!!  Lorenzo provided a hopeful story to base the rest of my life on....that no one can be counted out...EVER...and that there is good behind all beings...especially the four legged ones!  Lorenzo later became a therapy dog for children, elderly, and for his favorite program..a residential facility for Juvenile Offenders.  I will always remember one of the juveniles pulling me aside at the end of the session and telling me "I want to be like Lorenzo some day." With tears in my eyes I was able to understand exactly what I saw in that dog's eyes that day on the euthanasia table.  Lorenzo changed my life, and many others'.  He will continue to do so in his now senior years...and long after his time on this earth.  He is one of the many reasons I have dedicated my life to animals, to give a voice to the voiceless, and to instill a little kindness and a second chance to all!

It is with great gratitude that I ask you to please, help the NHSPCA to give a life full of second chances to the thousands of animals who need us, rely on us, and thank us from the bottom of their hearts. - Eden

A RESCUER’S CREED

[Susan M. Pearson]

I shall be a believer of all that is good in man and of all that is deserving in animals. I shall plead for their lives, campaign for their safety and uphold their right to a natural death. I shall seek out the injured and the maimed, the unloved, and the abandoned and tend to them in their last days. I shall not forget their place in the hierarchy of life, nor that  we walk in each other's paths. I shall bear witness to the wonder they bring into our lives and to the beauty they bestow upon our souls.  I shall renew their spirits when they are waning, bind their wounds when they bleed, cradle them when they whimper, and comfort them when they mourn.  I shall be near them in their hour of greatest need - a companion and friend when the time has come. I shall watch over them and console them and ask that the angels gather them in their arms. From the creatures of the earth I shall learn the fruits of compassion and undying love, and I shall be called the beloved.  In their company I shall indeed be blessed.   ~
