I first heard about Citizen Schools when I was a senior at Oberlin College, thinking about pursuing a career in education. I knew I wanted to work in urban schools and the two year Teaching Fellowship was a perfect opportunity to gain this experience.
In the last 18 months, I have built relationships with students, families, and teachers, taught math and life-skills lessons to 6th graders, and worked to connect Boston's middle school students with role models in various careers. The young people I work with continue to surprise and inspire me with their audacity and resilence.
Even though Citizen Schools has done amazing things within both of the schools I have worked in, there is still a long way to go. I know that if we can serve more middle schoolers in Boston and our other regions, we will be able to have a deeper impact and start to make strides toward closing the achievement gap.
