Jane Howard, Director of International Student Affairs, worked at Mount Ida College since 1990. Jane was a tireless advocate for the educational value of international study and exchange and helped our international students transition to Mount Ida College and the United States. Jane initiated the French Exchange program and encouraged many American students to expand their horizons through study abroad. To increase the importance of international education on our campus, she founded a chapter of Phi Beta Delta, the international honor society, at Mount Ida College and proudly helped to induct new members each year at Honors Sunday. She had a deep commitment to Mount Ida College and its students, and an endless capacity to give to her family, friends, colleagues and our students.
Jane loved to explore new places and came back from each adventure refreshed and full of wonderful stories about her travels. She spent over 20 years working with the American Field Service, an exchange program that places students with families all over the world. Jane served on the national board of NASFA, the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors, where she was a valued leader and mentor to her colleagues and young people starting out in the field.
Currently, Mount Ida offers a number of semester-long and short-term study abroad programs. Although students have expressed increasing levels of interest in adding international dimensions to their education, their participation is often limited due to financial constraints. Mount Ida College is establishing the Jane A. Howard Scholarship Assistance for Study Abroad Fund in her memory. This fund will provide financial assistance for needy Mount Ida students to participate in short term study abroad trips and semester study abroad. This will include monies to support travel to and from the destinations.
A plaque recognizing the Jane A. Howard Scholarship Assistance for Study Abroad will hang in the new Center for Global Connections at Mount Ida College.
