Last year surrounded by my amazing family and friends, I walked the UMASS Walk to Cure Cancer to celebrate being cancer free. After a long year of surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy I thought participating in the Walk was my way of giving back to those who had saved my life. Unfortunately, I had no way of knowing that my cancer journey was not over. I was diagnosed with metastatic rectal cancer with an area on my pelvis in February and again my life has been turned upside down. I have received radiation and am currently receiving chemotherapy. This year my family and friends will again participate in the Walk to Cure Cancer. This year I walk in hope - hope that with continued research and new therapies that I will live a long and productive life; hope that the next patient will not have to live in fear of re-diagnosis and hope that one day cancer will not be a terminal diagnosis.
