The Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games will begin with the lighting of the Flame of Hope in Athens, Greece on June 9th. 101 law enforcement officers and 10 Special Olympics athletes from around the world, serving as Guardians of the Flame, will then embark on a historic 17 day journey over three separate routes to conduct extensive runs and ceremonies in over 120 cities and towns in Greece as well as in Cyprus and Istanbul. The purpose and mission of the Final Leg is to create great awareness and excitement for Special Olympics and the World Games, encourage support and attendance of the Games, showcase the abilities, leadership, and determination of Special Olympics athletes who serve on the unified Final Leg Team, and to highlight local athletes at all of the Final Leg ceremonies. The Final Leg Team will safely deliver the Flame of Hope to the 2011 World Games Opening Ceremony in Athens on June 25th.
