For the past twenty years, my mom has fought against the crippling disease called Scleroderma.  For the past seventeen years, my mom has raised me and kept up with my busy schedule between horse shows and school. Soon after she noticed symptoms of Scleroderma, she was unable to do simple things, like brushing her teeth without expierencing extreme pain.  This once strong and independent woman was left weak, and fatigued after just walking around the room.  For twenty hard years, mom has been treated for Scleroderma by Dr. Silver at MUSC in Charleston, SC.  Dr. Silver and his research gave my mom hope that one day there will be a cure for Scleroderma. 

It's not only hard on my mom, but our whole family.  Even at a young age, I knew my mom was different from the other moms.  She wasn't able to do everything my friends' moms could.  I hated that for her.  As I grew older, I began to understand just how much Scleroderma affected my mom emotionally.  I began to see past her strong and reassuring mask  to the stressed and frustrated face.  I began to see her frustration in being restricted from normal activities.  She has missed some of my horse shows because of her health, and I know it kills her to see me leaving for a show without her. It has also been very hard on my dad despite his calm face.  He has been very supportive and reassuring to my mom and me through the years.
