Coach Potatoes Bike Trek 2011
"a good coach can make people see what they can be, rather than what they are"
For fourteen years Team Alpha has participated in the ALA of Massachusetts "Escape to the Cape" Bike Trek. The Event is a major fund-raiser for the American Lung Association and the Alpha-1 Foundation's "Building Friends for a Cure" program. The local Alpha-1 Support Group acts as the bridge between the ALA and the Alpha-1 Foundation, organizing the Team Alpha riders and volunteers. This year we have over 60 riders and volunteers from 14 states, ages ranging from 12-72. Three things are a given each year. It will rain at least ONE day, the CAPE is not flat, and GELL seats rule. BUT, a fun time will be had by all
Besides being a fund-raiser, the Trek offers us a chance to spread awareness on Alpha-1, the number one risk factor for getting COPD. It also provides us with a vehicle to remember Alphas we’ve lost. This year we have dedicated our ride to Ed Brailey who gave so much back to the community he loved. Team Alpha is the “Brailey Brigade” this year.
We're shaking things up a little this year and transforming "Twin Power" into the "Coach Potatoes to reflect our continued commitment but realistic participation given my physical status and John's hectic schedule. It would take a strong tail-wind, an all down-hill course, or a small Briggs and Stratton for me to ride this year and an unrealistic commute keeps John from attending. He will be testifying at the European Parliament's Commission on Access to Orphan Drugs in Brussels. I will be at the Cape Trek in person, Johnny via Skype or some Avatar (JZ?)
For all those that supported our efforts last year, a much belated THANK YOU. For those who didn't, here's another chance. No amount is too small. Pledge online here or send checks (noting it as a pledge in our name for this event) payable to Alpha-1 Foundation ...2937 SW 27th Ave, Suite 302, Miami, FL 33133
The "Coach Potatoes" have promised to match any amount pledged. Help us reach our goal.
May the spirit of Jack(Coach) be with you and thanks from his two spuds John and Fred
