Miles for Phil, for LHS, and for Melanoma
After moments of doubt, I am heading to the finish line of Ironman Boulder 70.3 on Sunday, August 5, 2012, in memory of my earliest childhood friend and fellow Lawrence High School graduate, Phil Lacey, whom we lost to melanoma.
It's been a bumpy triathlon road for me this year. Just prior to completing, IM Kansas 70.3 in early June in my hometown of Lawrence, KS, I was diagnosed with severe scoliosis. (Sort of a surprise after 62+ years to find this out) After finishing IM KS with knee pain, I was told just two weeks ago that I have a torn meniscus in my left knee that will require surgery. With the help and encourgement of friends, I am confident that I will see the finish line at Boulder next Sunday.
Phil's wife, Sharylyn, has led this fund raiser with a very generous contribution, which I have matched. For those of you LHS graduates (or anyone else) who contributes to the Melanoma Research Foundation, I will match your contributions to MRF with an additional contribution to the LHS Fund at the Lawrence Community Foundation.
