NANSEN AND GREENLAND
Last autumn I received a research grant form the Nansen Fund Inc. This grant inspired me to cross Greenland as a celebration of Fritdjof Nansen and his legacy, since in May 2010 it is 80 years since Nansen died. Nansen was not only a pioneering explorer, but also a great academic, Norway’s first ambassador to England in 1905, and the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for saving tens of thousands of refugees after World War I.
Why Haiti
There are of course many places around the world in dire need of help and financial support, and it is difficult to justify or explain why I have chosen Haiti over Sudan, Afghanistan and many other places.
The recent earthquake left most of the country’s infrastructure in ruins. Haiti, being the poorest country in the western hemisphere, has also a long history of corrupt and unstable political leadership, civil war and violence, which has torn the country and its people further apart.
The disaster happened while I was in the middle of my training program, and the images from Haiti have stuck with me since. I feel obliged to help and have decided that I will make it my priority to help children and young adults in Haiti regain some quality of life. One way I believe we can do so is by raising money to buy prosthetic limbs for children who have been disabled by the earthquake. I remember the great joy and freedom I experienced as a young boy running around, climbing trees and playing sports and, the hard work I have invested in preparation for this trip will no doubt be worthwhile if I can help just one child to a better and more meaningful life. I humbly ask you to join me in this effort by donating. Thank you so much in advance.
The Goal
Enthused by Nansen’s skiing achievement I also aspire to follow his good humanitarian example. Apart from the personal challenge it is for me to ski the 600 kilometers (360 miles) across the inland ice (more people have reached Mount Everest than have skied across Greenland) my goal is to raise 1 Norwegian Kroner for each meter, or a total of 600.000 Norwegian Kroners (ca. US$ 100.000) for the trip across Greenland. This is a very ambitious goal, but I believe that if we all pull together in the same direction we can make it happen.
Why the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund
I chose the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund for several reasons.
The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund is a well-known and trusted organization.
I am also confident that whatever amount we are able to raise together will be well spent on the people who need it the most, and not on administration nor on enriching corrupt leaders.
The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund is part of the William J. Clinton Foundation. The William J. Clinton Foundation is a public charity exempt from income tax under section 501(c)3 and eligible to receive tax-deductible, charitable donations.
The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund has already a proven record when it comes to helping the people of Haiti, and both President Clinton and President Bush have invested their own time, effort and reputation, and are truly committed to helping the people of Haiti, believing, as I believe, that together we can make a difference for the people of Haiti.
Every single penny raised will go directly to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and the relief effort in Haiti.
Thank you so much!
