Oxfam is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. Together with individuals and local groups in more than 100 countries, Oxfam saves lives, helps people overcome poverty, and fights for social justice.
Climate change affects our entire planet: natural resources, wildlife, and people. Any solutions to the challenge of climate change must address all of these different impacts in a fair and equitable way. By cutting emissions and providing funding for adaptation, the World can reduce damage to our planet‘s ecosystem while at the same time helping the poorest people survive the changes to their climate. Oxfam is bringing the human dimension to the climate change debate. Oxfam believes that in order for communities to adapt to climate change—indeed, in order for them to begin overcoming poverty—they must take early action to reduce their vulnerability and build their resilience to new and heightened risks.
As a humanitarian organization, their mission is to do whatever they can to reduce suffering and save lives during emergencies—whether they are caused by conflict or by natural events such as earthquakes, floods, or drought. To move fast and efficiently, they partner with local groups who know the people, the land, and the political context of the region in which the disaster strikes. Their network of partners stretches around the world. Even before a disaster strikes, Oxfam is working in innovative ways to reduce people's vulnerability to emergencies by helping them prepare to respond and to build their resiliency. When disaster strikes around the world, we and our partners respond quickly with life-saving assistance. Once the immediate danger has passed, they work to rebuild lives and reduce the risk of future disasters.
One in six people worldwide now suffer from chronic hunger, over a billion women, men, and children. And the problem is not limited to poor countries. At Oxfam, they’re working on solutions to ensure that no one, no matter where he or she lives, has to go to sleep hungry. Fighting hunger has long been at the core of Oxfam's mission.
