Wen De Oh Oaxaca! Gina DeMeo's Senior Project
Hola Everyone!
My name is Gina DeMeo and I am a Senior at Shepaug Valley High School in Washington, CT. I have been on two of the Simply Smiles trips to Oaxaca, Mexico and the experiences have changed my life.
This year, I'm taking on an extensive Senior Project, entitled "Wen De Oh* Oaxaca: An Exploration of Language, Culture, and the Coffee Industry". I am researching the Zapotec language, spoken by many of the people living in Oaxaca, as well as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and how it has negatively affected the independent coffee farmers of Mexico.
In addition to researching, I will also be fundraising for Simply Smiles! I'm planning on holding bake sales, taco parties, and other events to raise money. Now, I will also be fundraising through this website and competing for a chance to return to Oaxaca with Simply Smiles! My goal is to raise at least $1,500 by December 31st (the date this contest ends) and to raise $3,000 by the end of the school year.
Thank you all for your help and support! Every donation will truly make a difference.
~Gina
*"Wen De Oh" means "Welcome" in Zapotec!
