Pigs for Peace was created in collaboration with Great Lakes Restoration Foundation in partnership with PAIDEK microfinance and Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. A woman is given a piglet as a “loan”. When the pig matures and gives birth she returns 2 piglets back to the program and her “loan” is paid in full. These 2 new piglets can then be given to other women in the community. Pigs are relatively easy to maintain and they give large litters (6-12 piglets). The piglets are sold for around $35. This money is used by women to pay for food for the family, school fees for the children, medical fees and also allows women to start their own small businesses. Women in the program are meeting monthly and have formed a tight-knit group of support.
Pigs for Peace was started in 2008. Since then 85 women and their families have been supplied with pigs through the program. Pigs for Peace is working in 5 villages and other villages are asking for the program. 700 women are curently on our waiting list!
Sponsor a pig for a Congolese woman. For only $50, you can sponsor a pig or for $10 you can sponsor a part of a pig. Your funds support the cost of the pig, training for the woman on caring for the pig, and transportation of the pig to the woman.

Bukavu Action Team is a student group at Johns Hopkins University that is focused on promoting social stability and health in Eastern DR Congo. Their goal is to raise $1,000 which will provide 20 women with a pig and a way to move forward!
