Special Olympics Oklahoma provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for adults and children with intellectual disabilities The first competition was held at Skelly Stadium on the campus of the University of Tulsa where 200 special athletes participated. Today, over 9,500 Special Olympics athletes all over Oklahoma participate in our program.
Here in the Green Country Area, we offer competition in Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Golf, Horseshoes, Powerlifting, Soccer, and Motor Activities Training Program. Over 1,200 athletes participate in these events each year coordinated by the Green Country Area.
We would like to ask you to help these 1,200 individuals in the Green Country Area by making a contribution to help us put on Area events. The benefits of participating in these activities include improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence, a more positive self-image, friendships and increased family support. Special Olympics athletes carry these benefits with them into their daily lives at home, in the classroom, on the job and in the community. Families who participate become stronger as they learn a greater appreciation of their athletes’ talents. Community volunteers find out what good friends the athletes can be. Everyone learns more about the capabilities of people with intellectual disabilities.
