On November 10, 2012 I will be running my first half marathon. Why? Because of three letters that changed my life forever.
SMA.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
I had never heard of SMA until my daughter Hayden was diagnosed with it. SMA is degenerative disease causing muscle weakness that control walking, swallowing and breathing. SMA does not impact the mind and Hayden is your typical 4 year old who loves Disney princesses, horses and playing dress up with her friends. It has taken so much away but has never taken away her love and adventure for life. The few times she has been running with me she is a very demanding coach. When I try to slow my pace she insists on “1, 2, 3 GO!” pushing me to NEVER GIVE UP.
I am running to raise awareness. With awareness comes research and with research comes knowledge to treat and cure this disease.
How can you support me? Simple.
DONATE: Donate to the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation (theGSF) to help me reach my goal of raising $3,000. theGSF is an all volunteer organization and 100% of your tax deductible donation goes directly to fulfilling our mission.
Thank you for your support! YOU have made a difference!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Calafiore
