YOU MATTER! Please donate & forward the shelter plea to your friends, relatives, co-workers, neighbors & associates as appropriate.  Thank you very much.

Basset Rescue Network, www.bassetrescuenetwork.org, is located in Acton, Southern California. They need your help with funding due to the Station fire.

The shelters has 100 plus dogs  (basset hounds and mixes).
Kennel Manager (KM): Dawn Smith.
They are a nonprofit 501c3 animal rescue group. Tax ID# 20-3737011

A good number of old, sick dogs, a full of life basset with a doggy wheelchair who will "run" to you for a belly rub:  they may not be able to handle the smoke, stress, that means vet bills will come high. Their daily routine has changed rapidly, as they can smell the unusual smoke of fire,  different activites from caretakers, and cannot go to the exercise yards http://tinyurl.com/nx7sxy (due to smoke, soot, ashes..)

9:32 AM, 9/4/09, KM said: ..."They lifted the Acton evacs yesterday, with the condition if one thinks they are in danger, to immediately turn around and get right back out - as people begin coming back to the area we will have many such cases, and each is as equally heart breaking as the next....Yesterday a fireman arrived here - after 72 hours straight he had returned to his home to discover the Mt. Gleason fire camp ahd been over ran and burned.  They had evac'd the fire camp - no one took his dogs.  With tears in his eyes he asked where to start looking.  "I know they most likely died, but I HAVE TO TRY TO FIND THEM, I cannot loose hope".  We made many calls - and have his contact info.....

Yesterday recovery began.....
It was a tough day in that after an event of this nature, we really do need to take a deep breath - and figure out where we are at, hunker down and begin the clean up and recovery efforts....."

Air purifiers the shelter needs http://tinyurl.com/kj7jag ,

1:43 AM, 9/3/09, KM said: "...This evening (9/2/09) the smoke is still hanging, the need for air purifiers is about our biggest need at this point in time - the wind is gentle and we pray it stays that way....while we still are being hit with smoke in the afternoons, the fire appears to be staying put - and that is a very good thing. We're not out of the woods - but we are at least getting a break. Rumor of possible rain and thunder storms is on the horizon..."

List of air purifiers http://tinyurl.com/kkw6yc , or http://tinyurl.com/kj7jag

1:41 AM, 9/2/09, KM said: "...We were in evac mode in a big way when a gust came up and blew a wall of smoke and ash at us...We were on Stand By, and then about an hour alter it all calmed down....Let's hope an air purification system comes in quick after our interview with some network radio early evening on 9/1/09...Hear interview here http://tinyurl.com/lkop8p"

3:48 PM, 9/1/09, KM said: "...conditions here with smoke and ash JUST
turned horrible. Fire dept says we're still safe and 7 miles off the fire line, but I am RIGHT NOW vamping up. Please stay on alert.

3:38 PM, 9/1/09, KM said: "..conditions just got really flippin bad,.  I came down to check the fire pages -...I have to RIGHT NOW get crates ready, hounds in, misters on and call  xyz as we need air purifiers as of about 20 minutes ago.."

3:07 PM, 9/1/09, KM said: "Huge smoke and ash just hit us and hounds have to go back in - I rushed down to call fire department....Its okay - wind gust, fire is still not at Soledad and is about 7 miles off us at this moment moving primarily east..."

10:44 AM, 9/1/09, KM said: "News services are reporting clouds rolling in and moisture - possibility of RAIN - my immediate thought is - the Drool being slung is arriving!!...Today the smoke is very close to the ground - it's not unworkable - but oh the toll on the lungs!..FIre department is mapping and assessing containment this morning .....Dr. Young Kim, our amazing vet called yesterday offering any assistance he could - even to his office manager assisting at the evac location..."

2:44 AM, 9/1/09,  KM said: "We are safe as of 2:44AM.. We are holding our own ....the smoke and soot....The highway is littered with fleeing wildlife that ran to escape one demon - to be mowed down by another....
- "...-our emergency evacuation plans , which have been set up for 7 years are that we would evac to my parents house in Tarzana and emergency team leader, M
arie  will be calling all volunteers....
-"The fire is climbing yet another range as it slowly ticks its way directly at us on the north west front.
- "We are still beyond evacuation area, and the amazing fire brigades tell us not to panic - and it's hard to watch as flames leap in the air bounding over another hurdle to claim all that is before them.....
-
"Here from the property we would evacuate all animals with the assistance of several neighbors as during an evacuation it's unlikely that non area residents could get through...
- "a DC10 drops water in front of us and the belly of the plane is so low over us as they lift out that it feels you can touch it.  There is something extremely wrong with the world when you think of a DC10 in the terms of needing a bellyrub....

2:45 pm , 8/31/09  - Officials said the fire has burned 105,000 acres. The fire is 5 percent contained, with full containment expected on Sept. 15. http://cbs2.com/tv/Morris.Fire.Update.2.1146019.html

At noon, 8/31/09,  the fire is about 12 miles from the shelter! Kennel Manager said: "It's hard to tell how much closer during the day b/c of the smoke.  It's a lot easier at night when we can see the fire itself."

2:30AM, 8/30/09, the shelter is holding and they are anticipating an evacuation when it's critical. Shelter manager said: "... As we sit - attempting to keep hounds happy and safe for as long as we can - to move hounds in an evac situation like this is not something you do lightly - 3/4 of Acton is under mandatory evacuation - we are not - we are north of the 14 freeway - however, we will not take chances and if the fire lines shifts - or winds change, we will be evacuating.

We continue to ask for drool prayers for the hounds - earlier today we asked for prayers to keep the fire moving to the east...... and I have come to regret that request.  Earlier this evening a call came in - one that I have to share.  A friend called - very upset.  A fellow rescuer had evacuated their animals, and was with a pal - a firefighter - and the last call heard from him was from his cell - as he and his firefighter buddy laid on the floorboards trying to get fresh air - the fire had encircled him and they could not get out.  They are to our east by several miles. ........."
