“If I should have a daughter, I want her to look at the world through the underside of a glass-bottom boat, to look through a microscope at the galaxies that exist on the pinpoint of a human mind, because that's the way my mom taught me.” –Sarah Kay
Dear Friend,
In twenty-four years of exploring the world, I have learned two things: the first is that at some point you will have problems you simply cannot carry alone. The second is that our very survival through these trials is dependent on the impulsive compassion of others. Join me as I dedicate this summer to raising $10,000 to support Flying Kites Kenya, a home and school for orphaned children that exemplifies this compassion in an extraordinary way. One third of this fundraising goal will support me in traveling to Kenya as I hope to commit the next year of my life to volunteering for Flying Kites and the rest will go directly to the children who come to live there.
There are over 2 million orphaned children in Kenya, and over 60,000 of these children are living on the streets leaving our world’s future generation stuck in a cycle of poverty, abuse, and trauma. An impoverished child faces challenges that are not rooted in currency but in a fundamental lack of choice, of freedom, and the platform to dream their own potential. The rarity of Flying Kites resides in this desire to enable imagination and resolution by raising children in a home environment where they have access to nutritious foods grown on their own land, compassionate care, and a holistic education. John Hunter says that if we can touch a child’s mind, fine, but if we can touch their hearts then the mind contact lasts longer and goes deeper.
This is the reason I urge you to become involved with Flying Kites, because they are systemically changing a static orphaned childcare system by radically rethinking our resources to create wealth and change rather than reducing poverty through short-term solutions. By affecting one child at a time through Flying Kites Leadership Academy, you are giving our future a hope for peace and love. Children who are taught to be inquisitive about the world around them and who are loved and cared for as every child has the right to be, will be our future leaders, mothers, fathers, and peacemakers.
We have the information, the statistics and the facts that constitute the impoverished parts of the world, but we very often choose not to pay attention to it, and we don’t allow a shift in our hearts to take place. As in the way we learn swimming from swimming, and biking by biking, we also learn compassion by acting compassionately. The donation you make today will go towards supporting the education and care of beautifully-minded children who never fail to stir me, as well as Flying Kite’s larger endeavor to set the template for compassionate care to children globally. I am committed to the vision of Flying Kites and I am hoping you will help me accomplish this goal as I spend every day motivated as ever to amplify it.
The story of our own childhood dreams cannot be told without telling the story of the people who taught us to be eager by the beauty of our imagination, and who gave us the permission to live in a boundless world. Allow your story to be told through the dreams you engender today with your generous contribution to Flying Kites.
Yours in Gratitude,
Hannah
