Some Facts:
- There is growing consensus among leading economists that girls’ education is the most effective way to alleviate poverty in Africa.
- Twenty-four million girls in sub-Saharan Africa are not in school because the cost of education is beyond their families’ means.
- Education has a proven impact on women:
- Education will increase her lifetime income by 25% on average,
- Education will reduce her risk to be HIV-positive by 66%,
- Education increases the chance that her kids live beyond the age of 5 by 40%.
- Educating girls and women helps individuals. It also unlocks energies which drive social and economic development.
- 645,400 children in some of the poorest regions of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana and Tanzania have benefited from Camfed’s education program.
Camfed has been working to eradicate poverty through education since 1993.
