Here are a few facts for you:
The Emergency: Shortly before 5 p.m. on January 12, an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale struck the impoverished island nation of Haiti – the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and the scene of frequent disasters. The epicenter of the earthquake was centered 14 miles southeast of the capital
of Port-Au-Prince, which has some 2 million residents. While the extent of the devastation and casualties – which are feared to be massive – is still being revealed, Save the Children staff on the scene report many collapsed and damaged buildings. The earthquake is believed to be the worst in Haiti’s modern history.
Save the Children’s Response: Save the Children has had a presence in Haiti for over 20 years and launches immediate relief for children affected by the island’s frequent natural disasters. Save the Children is conducting rapid assessments of need in and around hard-hit communities, is sending international disaster relief experts, is initiating relief that will include food and non-food supplies and plans to address displaced families’ health and hygiene needs. With all indications of an extreme emergency, the agency is planning for a large-scale response and has released funding from its Halaby-Murphy Endowment Fund to help underpin initial activities.
