Harsh's SD Marathon Fundraising FOR Doctors-Without-Borders
I'm running the San Diego marathon (26.2 Miles/42 Kilometers) on June 1st and recently decided to run it for charity when I became confident that I could do it. I was struggling with some knee problems about a month ago that have since become manageable.
I'm trying to raise $1000 for MSF/Doctors Without Borders. My parents are raising half of it.
The other $500. I've set a goal of getting 100 friends to donate $5 a piece. Think of it as a graduation gift.
What is Doctors Without Borders?
MSF is an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters, or exclusion from health care in more than 70 countries. MSF was founded in 1971 to both provide emergency medical assistance and bear witness publicly to the plight of the people it assists. In emergencies and their aftermath, MSF provides health care, rehabilitates and runs hospitals and clinics, performs surgery, battles epidemics, carries out vaccination campaigns, operates feeding centers for malnourished children, and offers mental health care.
Why MSF/DWB: I'm passionate about global health and truly believe that now more than ever there is a greater need for organizations that provide medical care and distribute medical supplies in areas of need.
Currently MSF/DWB is focused on the post-cyclone situation in Myanmar. As of May 12th the first MSF plane has arrived in the country. If you've been looking for a way to donate to the post-cyclone aid effort, this is a great way to do it. News updates here: www.doctorswithoutborders.org
The Wall Street Journal recently reported on decrepit situation saying that "Disease and starvation remain the biggest risks. There still were no reports of widespread disease over the weekend. But it often takes two weeks or more before serious disease problems develop, experts said; sometimes it can take as many as three months before new colonies of malarial mosquitoes hatch and spread the disease.
" The medical aid effort in Myanmar over the next two months will be critical.
