We recently found out from IOM (International Organization for Migration) that we are not only responsible for providing services for the 10,000 people living in our camp at Terrain D’Acra (Port-au-Prince), but we are also responsible for an additional 15,000 living on the outskirts of the camp who come in to use our facilities or visit our clinic.

We launched a big campaign last week to arrange transitional shelters for each of these families.  Transitional shelters cost $1,000 each, are termite, rot and hurricane-resistant, and last three years.  With the rainy season already underway, it’s essential to protect these people because the shelters they have built from scrap metal and wood will not withstand the weather.  Strong winds will turn the scrap pieces into projectiles, injuring many people and disease will spread as rats and mosquitoes flourish and sewage is washed through the city.

$1,000 to house a family of five for three years is really a tiny amount.  Even small donations are hugely helpful because we can buy the tools to get one member from each family back to work clearing rubble and constructing the shelters.
