Laura’s March 2011 will raise funds for: 1) Dirt Divas, a mountain-biking program for middle school girls, will use the money raised to integrate a self-defense component that includes developing physical and emotional skills and learning tactics to deal with bullying, harassment, and sexual assault. As the ultimate goal is prevention, the program will also work on building self-esteem and a sense of self-worth so that girls learn early to value themselves, set boundaries, and recognize that assault of any nature is not their fault. 2) Parallel Justice, which helps victims of any crime occurring in Burlington, will use the money raised to offer survivors of domestic and sexual assault alternative healing opportunities, such as yoga, meditation, fitness classes, and other programs of that nature. Survivors are eligible regardless of how long ago the assault occurred as Parallel Justice recognizes that sexual assault often has long-lasting and continuing effects.
