As some of you may know, my partner was recently diagnosed as having the Huntington's Disease gene mutation, and is currently, pre-symptomatic. Her mom was diagnosed about a year ago as having the disease. HD is a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is no effective treatment or cure.
HD is also "family disease", not just because it is inherited from a parent, but also because it profoundly affects the entire family unit emotionally, socially, and financially. HD, like Alzheimer and Parkinson's, takes a person away from their loved ones and the rest of the world long before they die. There is no cure at the moment, however, researchers are working hard to find a cure and we should never lose hope that this disease can be conquered. Until there is a cure we must care for ourselves and each other and invest as much as we can in research and outreach to our communities. Because of its stigma, there have been times that families have kept HD a secret from friends and their own family. We are walking to help promote awareness and by helping raise money so we can reach our goal of finding a cure!
I welcome anyone wishing to walk with us to raise awareness and money for this important cause. If you cannot walk but wish to donate, please do so through this site. If you cannot walk or donate, please help by sharing this information with others.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to our fundraising efforts. Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
