Car 17 - Rhino Charge 2011
Thank you for visiting Car 17’s fundraising page.
The annual Rhino Charge held in Kenya will take place on the 3rd June 2011.
In addition to its ongoing conservation commitments to the Aberdare Mountains, the conservation charity is to start new fence projects in Mt Kenya and Mau Mt Eburru next year (2011).
Rhino Chargers are known for their daring at the event. Rhino Ark is daring to take on the equally huge challenges in Mt Kenya and Mau Eburru.
The Mt Kenya fence will encircle over 2000 km2 and will be at least 400 kms long – equal or possibly longer than the now complete Aberdares fence. Mt Kenya is a prime ‘water tower’. With the Aberdares these mountain ecosystems are the source of four of Kenya’s seven largest river systems providing water and energy -both surface and geothermal- for Kenya’s population and the city of Nairobi in which 80% of GDP is derived. Mau Eburru is about 80 km2 of pristine forest – hugely infiltrated by illegal loggers but whose forest edge communities are already trying to conserve its water catchment and indigenous forest. Mau Eburru and Mt Kenya are strongholds of the critically endangered Eastern Mountain Bongo antelope.
The 2011 Rhino Charge will be Rhino Rouge’s 8th year and we aim to do even better than this year.
Car 17 has raised just over 14 million Kenyan shillings – that is over $185,000 USD as a team over the last 7 years
Car 17 has won the Coup des Dames Tim Nicklin Award four times
Car 17’s average result is 12th out of a field of around 58 – 60 cars.
The Rhino Charge is a motor sport event in which entrants will be required to visit a number of points (Guard Posts) while travelling the shortest possible distance across difficult, trackless terrain, where speed is not a necessity. The event is organised in order to raise funds to support the activities of the Rhino Ark Kenya Charitable Trust.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor Car 17: Rhino Ark will receive your money faster and, and please note that this charity has 501(c) 3 status.
