About Me
I am an executive of the Dance Marathon Board of 2010 at Niles North. As executives, we are organized into committees and we meet every Wednesday after school. I am on the Finance committee, which deals with all of the money raised for Dance Marathon throughout the year.
What is Dance Marathon?
Dance Marathon is an annual event at Niles Township where a different charity is chosen each year. The dancers then spend all year raising money for the charity. In 2008, the district raised $70,000 for the charity Partners in Health. Last year, the district raised $83,000 for Camp One Step at a Time. Dance Marathon has raised over $323,000 since it has been started.
The actual event is held during May. It alternates between the two high schools and it a huge celebration of everybody's efforts to raise both money and awareness in the past year. During the seven-hour night, people can dance, play DDR or other video games, and have a fun night with their friends. Many students and teachers come for this event and it is a big celebration for everybody who took the time and effort to raise money and awareness for the charity.
This Year's Charity: Expanding Lives
Expanding Lives supports the education of West African young women who are the first in their families to continue past primary school. Strong, intelligent girls who are proving themselves against daunting odds are offered short-term, highly structured conferences in the United States. The conferences focus on bringing broader solutions to local problems.
The academic opportunities and travel experiences provided by Expanding Lives build on participants' existing interests and knowledge to better ensure success in school and in the community.
We help young women to develop the voice, the self-confidence, and the problem solving skills necessary for empowerment. Expanding Lives encourages participants to become active role models, leaders, and agents of change in their home communities.
