About Me

I am an executive of the Dance Marathon Board of 2009 at Niles North. As executives, we are organized into committees and we meet every Wednesday after school. I am on the Finance committee, which deals with all of the money raised for Dance Marathon throughout the year. The other committees include Alumni, Community Outreach, Corporate Relations, Dancer Registration, Entertainment, Food, Morale, Public Relations, and Website.

What is Dance Marathon?

Dance Marathon is an annual event at Niles Township where a charity is chosen each year and raise money for a deserving charity. Last year, the district raised $70,000 for the charity Partners in Health. Dance Marathon has raised over $200,000 since it has been started six years ago.

The actual event is held during May. It alternates between the two high schools and it a huge celebration of everybody's efforts to raise both money and awareness in the past year. During the seven-hour night, people can dance, play DDR or other video games, and have a fun night with their friends. Many students and teachers come for this event and it is a big "pat-on-the-back" for everybody who took the time and effort to raise money and awareness for the charity.

This Year's Charity: Camp One Step at a Time

This year's charity is Camp One Step at a Time, which is a camp for kids with cancer. The camp allows children to be normal kids for a week. Many of the counselors and volunteers have either known somebody with cancer or are cancer survivors themselves. It gives a sense of hope to the campers because it shows that it's possible to win the fight against cancer and to lead a normal life. By going to camp, many of the campers also make life-long friends. It costs $100 to send a child to camp a week and $700 to cover all of the costs of going to camp. Because some people can't afford to pay the entire fee, the camp waives the fee; the camp then has to pay the remainder of the money. By helping me reach my goal, we can help pay for the remainder and we can help send four cancer patients to camp to enjoy a week of their summers as normal kids. They can participate in fun activities like swimming, water skiing, camp outs and many other activities.

By donating to me, you can help a child experience a week of freedom, fun, happiness, and get to meet other kids who have to go through the same things that they do: hang out, make friends, and just relax during the summer. It is very welcoming and heart-warming place. By helping me reach my goal, you can help give these kids something that they don't get to do at home: the chance to put their struggles of cancer aside and just be a kid.
