A message from Barbara Riggs; ASD's Fundraising Chairman
This year, we would like to acknowledge the hard work, support and dedication of our staff members in making Arts & Services for Disabled, Inc. what it is today. The amazing projects you see and read about take a creative spirit and they give daily to this synergistic relationship with the students and with the Love Before Learning philosophy.
There is a major challenge that we face as a nonprofit organization -- our staff has not had a salary increase since February 1, 2006 when the State lifted a three-year freeze on salaries. ASD cannot give salary increases— that is up to the State. In 2009-2010 fiscal year, we experienced a 3% cut from the State and expect an additional 1.25% cut this year. Staff has diligently given up an hour off their day to be sure there are no layoffs and students continue to receive quality services.
One thing we can do about this challenge, however, is to designate funds from donations through our annual Make A Difference Campaign and other fundraising events to reward our staff. As a Board Member, I have had the honor of evaluating ASD’s programs and have heard almost unanimously when asked if staff members have enough resources to carry out their daily duties: “We make do with what we have.”
Staff has planned and carried out two fundraising events this year, giving selflessly of their time: A 5k in August at the San Gabriel River Trail with participation by students (some in wheelchairs) and parents; and LOVE IS IN THE AIR theater night in September where students performed in two plays with their own orchestra, at a local theater, The Art Theatre of Long Beach. As you can see, staff members help themselves through fundraising events that benefit all of ASD. We sincerely appreciate your support in the past and look forward to hearing from you this year as we give recognition to staff members.
