Thank you for visiting our page. We're publishing this information for several reasons. First and foremost, our goal is to increase awareness amongst our friends, family and the community about this hereditary, neurological disorder that our family is faced with. It is our duty to share our personal story with you, in order to educate as many individuals as possible. Finally, in honor of our mother, Marcia Hathaway, and grandmother, Marge Rice, we're hosting the first annual Grosse Pointe Hoops for Huntington's fundraiser.
Huntington's Disease is a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is at present, no cure. Huntington's Disease slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, talk, and reason. Eventually, that person will become totally dependent on others for their care. At the present time, there is only one FDA approved drug for a symptom of HD. Huntington's profoundly affects the lives of the affected individual as well as the entire family.
Our grandmother is 80 years old, and was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease approximately 10 years ago. Until recently, she lived at home and was cared for by our grandfather on a daily basis. Due to the declination in her health, she now lives in a Connecticut Nursing home, and requires total care from the staff.
Our mother, Marcia, was just recently diagnosed following a positive genetic test for the Huntington Trait. We three girls, each have a 50% chance of also inheriting the disease and developing symptoms. Our mother is our role model, as she has handled this with strength and grace that we can only imagine.
Our goal through the Hoops for Huntington's Hoopathon is to raise awareness for the disease and raise money for the Huntington's Disease Society of America, to increase research and hopefully improve the outlook of families like ours nationwide.
The Hoopathon is scheduled for Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 12-4pm at the Windmill Pointe Park Gym. We will be looking for Hoopathon participants, as well as sponsors, and anyone that is willing to donate money, prizes or their time :)
We are incredibly grateful in advance for your support and love you all dearly.
- Rachel, Bridget & Amy Hathaway
