Cancer has touched all of our lives. This event is intended to honor the loved ones we have lost, support those currently battling the disease, recognize the survivors among us and to remind us all that cancer doesn't just affect individuals - it affects families and communities, all of humankind.
My father was diagnosed with Stage IV Brain Cancer in June, 2008 and lost the battle 16 months later. My family and friends had the same reaction that anybody does when something evil invades their life. It’s so trite and so cliché, but this is something that “happens to other people. It’s not supposed to happen to us.” The effects of cancer are deep and wide: physically demeaning, mentally exhausting, faith challenging, but through and through, they are everlasting. We are held hostage to its unrelenting heartaches and unsolved mysteries. Its arrogant nature devastates the life of the person afflicted and its treachery often reaches far beyond the individual. It can affect their loved one’s relationships, jobs, life philosophy and personal religion. But, perhaps, most profoundly, it enhances one’s ability to empathize with those who share a similar story. If you’ve ever wondered why people suddenly decide to devote their time and energy to fundraising activities to “find a cure,” ask me. It’s about believing in something worthwhile. It’s about passion, hope and love.
