Hi, friends--

I've been working with the New York Writers Coalition ever since the organization was founded about ten years ago. Through them, I've had the opportunity to conduct writing workshops in New York City with everyone from at-risk teens in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn and kids at my own neighborhood library, to incarcerated women at Rikers Island! By far the most amazing thing I've seen is  the power the written word can have to transform lives, simply by offering those who consider themselves "voiceless" in society an  opportunity to express themselves and receive positive feedback on what they have to say, for many perhaps for the very first time!

Your support of New York Writers Coalition and their free writing programs can help us preserve these receptive corners for creativity. Time and again I've watched those that NYWC works with not only gained the confidence to continue writing, but also to publish their work, and to read in important venues throughout New York.It really is a little bit of magic. I hope there continue to be enough people who believe in the importance of words and the time and space to collect them on paper -- so that these programs can continue, and even expand.
