iRUN FOR AUTISM - America

100 Miles for Autism

NOT DONE YET:

In addition to the 100-miler I ran in May, I will be running this year’s Marine Corps Marathon in October as a member of the Run for Autism team.  This will be my 4th Marine Corps Marathon and my 17th overall.  But it’ll be my first running with a team, and I’m really looking forward to sharing the whole marathon experience with my OAR teammates.

For those of you who may be new to my webpage and my story, here are few additional links to an interview I gave to a friend/trainer prior to the hundred and the race report this same friend/trainer wrote afterwards.  Hopefully these will help give some more insight into my 100-miler – why I ran it, what it was like, and how I ever became a runner in the first place.

100-MILER RACE RESULTS:

I completed the MMT 100-Miler in 34 hours, 13 minutes and 57 seconds.

Thanks to my stellar pacers/crew (Bryan, Shannon, Josh, Tony & Mr. Bolt) for their support, their enthusiasm, and their willingness to run through the rain, track me down along the course and gently nudge me along my way.  I couldn't have made it the whole way without you.

And thanks to all who donated either online or in person.  Your generosity not only pushed me way past my fundraising goal but also reminded me why I was running.  Thanks so much for your encouragement.

My name is James Stout. On May 16 & 17,  I will be running the Massanutten 100 Mile Run in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley as a way of raising money for the Organization for Autism Research.

Apart from being a runner with 16 marathons and 3 ultras under his belt, I also happen to be autistic. I have Asperger's Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism characterized by deficits in social interaction and non-verbal communication.

Did you know:
  • Autism affects as many as 1 in every 150 children in the United States
  • It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans may be affected with autism
  • Of the approximately 4 million babies born every year, 24,000 of them will eventually be identified as autistic
  • 1 out of 94 boys are suspected of being on the spectrum with perhaps more going undiagnosed
As disheartening as these statistics might seem, there is cause for hope.

The Organization for Autism Research was created in December 2001 – the product of the shared vision and unique life experiences of OAR’s seven founders. Led by these parents and grandparents of children and adults on the autism spectrum, OAR set out to use applied science to answer questions that parents, families, individuals with autism, teachers and caregivers confront daily. No other autism organization has this singular focus.

OAR’s mission is to apply research to the challenges of autism.  OAR depends upon public donations to continue its mission. So please consider making a pledge today.

Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure and any amount would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for your support -- and please feel free to spread the word.
