Nearly one million people in the United States carry a hereditary cancer gene mutation which can lead to an increased risk for breast and ovarian cancer.  People you may know who have this gene are Christina Applegate, Melissa Etheridge and myself.   The mutation can increase the risk of breast cancer by nearly 85% and ovarian cancer by up to 60%.   Many people carry the mutation and aren't aware of their very high risk.   I lost my Mom and Aunt from breast cancer when they were in their 50's.  I was 53 when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  Cancer is difficult for all families.  Hereditary cancer can affect entire families for generations.

FORCE, Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered, is the only national nonprofit oganization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by hereditary cancer. For over 10 years FORCE has been providing lifesaving information and resources to families at high risk through it materials, events and  web-site.     www.facingourrisk.org.  

FORCE's programs:

     *Provide caring and experienced support with decision making, insurance    issues and family dynamics.

      *Help families understand  the newest medical research assessible so they can make informed decisions.  Provide medical resources to these individuals and their families. 

      *Actively advocate for increased research and resources that will help in the prevention, detection and treatments for breast and ovarian cancer.
