As some of you may know, I have been training over the past two months for the Long Branch (NJ) Half Marathon, which will take place on Sunday, May 2nd. My sister, Christie, asked me to the run the race with her a few months back, thinking it would be nice for us to work toward a shared goal. I agreed. When we told my brother, Bernard, of our plans, he signed on as well. (Christie has since suffered an injury that will prevent her from competing, but she will be there to cheer on Bernard and me.)
As many of you also know, it has now been more than five years since our mother Patricia passed away following a 10-month fight with uterine cancer. In her memory, my family founded The PDR Foundation to continue her legacy and assist others who have been affected by cancer. Up to now, we have directed most of our support toward the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge location based in New York City, with Christie orchestrating our efforts. Hope Lodge NYC is an amazing facility in Midtown Manhattan that offers free, temporary housing for cancer patients and caregivers who have traveled from all over the world to Manhattan for the world-class treatment that the hospitals here offer. (I encourage you to read a bit about it here: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/subsite/hopelodge/NY_NewYorkCity/nyc_index.asp, and view some of the photos here :http://www.hopelodgenyc.org/.) We are currently in Year 3 of a five-year financial commitment with the facility.
The more I've gotten into the training, the more I've thought about how happy my mother would have been to know that her kids planned to take part in an activity like this together. As such, I think this is a perfect opportunity to raise funds for future PDR Foundation initiatives. If you would like to contribute to our efforts, you can donate in one of two ways. You can donate through this website using your credit card by clicking either of the two "Give Now" buttons, but please note that a 7.5% fee will be deducted from your donation by this site. Or, you can send a check to: The PDR Foundation, 148 New Dorp Lane, Staten Island, NY, 10306. Any and all contributions are hugely appreciated. And whether or not you can contribute, I'd love to see some of you on the Jersey Shore boardwalk on May 2nd!
