DOUG FLUTIE, JR. FOUNDATION FOR AUTISM

Dougie's Boston Marathon Team 2012

Jason Mayes's Page

2/28/12

We just wanted to thank everybody for their support of this cause.  You gave of yourself to help others and that is an inspiration to Jennifer and I.  Briefly, running has been such a blessing in my life.  It has taught me so much.  To be able to take a negative personal experience and turn it into such a positive experience for so many others is truley amazing.  None of it would be possible without the support of our friends and loved ones.  We are grateful to have you in our lives.

Sunday 1/22/12

2nd week of Boston training finished.  Feeling strong.  I'm right where I should be. 12 weeks and counting.  We're doing well, but need more support.

Please help us give deserving kids and their families a brighter future.  Please take a moment to read our story below and consider donating. Thanks.

2012

Happy New Year.  Time to reflect, set new goals and strive for them.  We are very excited for this year.  We have a couple milestones in the Mayes family.  I have Boston.  Jennifer will train and complete her first marathon in the fall.  I am super stoked for her.  I know the journey will be a life changing experience.  It makes me smile just thinking about it.  I'll be there every step of the way, literally.

We're over half way to achieving our fundraising goal. Please read out story below and consider donating.

Sunday 12/4/11

Congratulations to all the White Rock Marathon finishers.  Running teaches us many things.  Today it taught preserverance.  One of the many valuable life lessons that strengthens all of us in our daily lives.  Please take a minute and check out our story.  Talk to you soon.

Sunday 11/20/11

Quick report on the Wild Hare Ultra Trail Marathon.  It was a tremendous adventure and experience.  We ran with some great people and everybody reached their goal.  I finished 9th overall in the 50k with a time of 5 hrs and 8 mins.  My wife, Jennifer, ran the 15 mile race.  This was farther than she has ever run before and her first run on a trail.  She did great and I'm super proud of her.

Please help us give deserving kids and their families inspirational experiences like the one we just shared.  Please take a moment to read our story below and consider donating. Thanks.

Please take a few minutes to visit the following link.  This is just one example of how your donation to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation can help change lives.

a note from Jennifer Mayes (Jason Wife) – We are already overwhelmed with the generosity that we have been shown by our friends and family.  Please consider making a donation or at least enjoy reading and keeping up with our story.

Jason is running his first ultra-marathon this weekend! He will be participating in a 50K (31 miles) trail run called the Wild Hare. His personal goal for the race is an ambitious finish of under 5 hours. The race takes place at the Tejas Trails in Warda Texas about an hour South of Austin. Jason has been running the trails out in Rowlett to prepare for the race and has really enjoyed challenging himself by stepping out of his comfort zone and running in a new environment. The race will be a very challenging as there is very little flat terrain.
This season Jason pushed me to train with the DRC for my third half marathon as he enjoyed and got so much benefit from running with a group in previous years. He made it clear that he was going to take this season “off” so we could focus on my running for a season and he could “rest” before Boston training in the spring; as he plans to give this season his full attention. A few weeks into my program he started tell me about this trail run a few of his running buddies were doing…. A few days later he was writing up a training program for his first off road ultra-marathon. This is Jason’s idea of taking a season “off”. I also have to add he stuck to his promise and made my running and my miles the focus of the fall season.
This will be Jason’s last big race before beginning his training for the Boston Marathon. Jason plans to train with the DRC (Dallas Running Club). This was the group he trained with last year, the program and a few runners in particular where very instrumental in supporting him throughout the training season. He is really looking forward to getting back out there and seeing what he is capable this year. I have no doubt it will be his most challenging and rewarding season yet.

Friday 11/4/11 Our Story

Jason has been accepted onto the Doug Flutie Autism Foundation team for the Boston Marathon. He will now get to run the Boston marathon that he ran a qualifying time for, but due to the new cap restrictions missed official entry by 14 seconds.  Jason and I have several dear friends who have children who are living with autism every day. This has already been a real learning experience. Through helping others and doing a lot of good we are going to also reach our personal goal.  We genuinely feel like this has been a lesson in seeing beyond ourselves. We are very blessed to have each other, amazing friends and family and two healthy, wonderful children.  We feel this is our opportunity to give back for all of the gifts we have in our lives.  We fully believe that when you put good out into the universe, that good is returned to you.

The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism was established by NFL quarterback Doug Flutie and his wife, Laurie, in honor of their son, Doug, Jr. who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. Doug and Laurie first began raising funds for autism in 1998 through a donor advised fund, under the management of the Giving Back Fund. In 2000, they established the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, Inc. as an independent foundation to continue this work. Since 1998, the Fluties have helped raise over 11 million dollars for autism through corporate and individual donations and fundraisers such as the Boston Marathon.

We are required to raise $4,000 for the foundation and hope to exceed that now that we have this opportunity to do so much good. After reading about the charity, I now feel honored to be a part of what they do for children and their families. We are asking for anything you can do to help raise money for an amazing organization and for a dedicated husband, father and runner.
