21st Annual 3 Day Ride
October 8, 9 & 10th
The Event: This annual three day bike ride brings together a small group of cyclists ranging from first time riders to experienced former racers for a casual three day ride. This year the course takes riders from urban Atlanta, to rural West Georgia then up to the edge of the Appalachian Ridge region of the State and then back to where it starts in the Va. Highlands neighborhood of Atlanta. (300 miles +/-)
The Cause: Special Olympics Georgia cycling. Cycling is the most expensive sport in the Special Olympics program, costing in excess of $350 per athelete. Helping support our atheletes with the best equipment we can is our goal.
Ride History: The innaugural ride, from Atlanta to Savannah, was comprised of three of us wanting to get on our bikes, aim them East and see how long it would take us to ride to the coast. Blessed with ignorance (and young legs), our bikes were loaded down with such essentials as a hair dryer, extra shoes and probably a canned ham. Since then we have wised up, having a support van carry gear, staying in the finest hotels rural Georgia has to offer while still keeping the ride a casual group of old and new freinds rolling through the countryside. Over the years the ride has gone from Atlanta to Savannah (15 times) and Atlanta to Charleston (5 times) and has raised more than $50,000 for the Special Olympics Georgia.
The Course:
Day one takes the tour from urban Atlanta to rural Calloway Gardens in Pine Mountain Georgia where riders can cool off in the pool at the Lodge.
Day two is rolling hills from Pine Mountain to Cedartown Georgia where the ride ends with a dip in the lake and a bonfire on a small farm just outside of town.
Day three takes the tour from Cedartown back to Virginia Highlands, covering much of the Silver Comet Trail. The total tour distance is around 300 miles.
Riders are free to join for any or all days. A support van accompanies the tour. Although the riders cover their own expenses, there is no cost to enter.
