I have recently been accepted to be a volunteer with the non-profit Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) organization.  This project, as you will read in the link below, is an exciting teaching experience to share my knowledge with Physical Therapy Students at Universidad Mariano Galvez (UMG) in Guatemala City and another site in Cobán. I will be teaching at the University March 12th through 16th.  I have also been given the opportunity to experience home visits in this region and to work with children with disabilities.  

If you are reading this, then you know me, and know how absolutetly amazing this opportunity is for me.  I was so inspired after my 10 day expereince in Haiti (see picture).

 It was difficult to put that experience in words.  I knew that I was fortunate enough to receive an amazing education and that sharing that education would be a great feeling.  I had no idea how much I would learn in return.  We made push-up blocks for stengthening and transfer training out of cardboard and a sliding board out of packing materials.  I had my patient climbing trees to achieve his gait training goals following traumatic amputation.  That type of creativity was inspiring!

I feel like I have now found the opportunity to reignite this passion in Guatemala, through teaching about Spinal Cord Injury management, as well as posture, seating, and mobility options. I know that what I will really gain is all the learning from all the people and therapists I will encounter.   

Health Volunteers Overseas has made a 5 year commitment to this teaching program, and I hope to continue my work with this project.  So you will know that you will be helping me to build a program that will have long lasting effects and will NOT go unnoticed.

Any donation, no matter how small, will be of great importance.  I will be financing this trip on my own, incuding airline travel, transportation in-country, housing, meals and  educational materials and equipment that will be donated to this site.  These donations are all tax-deductible and you will be sent all the appropriate information.
