We are at it again! We are excited to announce our 2nd annual Hoop-a-thon to benefit the Huntington's Disease Society of America. Our first year was such a success with your help that we doubled our goal of $7500!
As many of you know, our mom, Nora, was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease in May 2006. HD is a genetic degenerative brain disorder for which there is, at present, no effective treatment or cure. HD slowly diminishes an individual's ability to walk, talk, think and reason. Eventually, the person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care.
In our case, we are fortunate that our mom developed the symptoms of the disease in what is considered later in life. However, the typical age onset is 30-40 years old, and many who are affected have small children at home for which to care and who are also at risk for developing the disease. HD affects males and females equally and crosses all ethnic and racial boundaries. Each child of a person with HD has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the fatal gene. Everyone who carries the gene will develop the disease.
HD affects the lives of entire families - emotionally, socially and economically. There is no cure for the disease, but over the past ten years major strides have been made. Since there is no cure or effective treatment, funds for research are desperately needed.
Therefore, in conjunction with the HDSA Upstate NY Chapter we are organizing our 2nd annual hoop-a-thon to raise money for HD. With the funds raised at the event we hope to, one day, help find a cure for everyone who suffers from HD. All proceeds go directly to the Huntington's Disease Society of America.
This year’s event will be held Saturday, November 6th, 1-4pm at Cobleskill-Richmondville High School.
